It is said that as far back as 1901 vehicle body manufacturers in the States where building special orders for motor homes but the first verifiable records that we can find date from 1905 when Oscar Peter arrived in Tampa in a covered wagon. This is acknowledged as being the event that formed America's oldest trailer club Tin Can Tourists although TCT did not become formally organised untill 1919.

A few memoriable dates

  • 1910 First mass produced camping Trailers
  • 1914 Charles Kellog built a Motor Home from a single fallen redwood tree
  • 1917 Curtis Wright built the first 5th wheel (or 5vers) RV's
  • 1922 New York Times reported that "15 million campers are hitting the road!"
  • 1930 Wally Byam in full time occupation building travel trailers called Airstream
  • 1966 Winnebago develops the first mass produced motor home assembly line
